FAMILY ACTIVITIES ABOUT FRIENDSHIP

Updated: Feb 1

FRIENDSHIP DILEMMAS

Instructions:
  1. Read the dilemma to your child (or they can read it).

  2. Ask them the questions and give them time to answer.

  3. Once the child answers, parents are encouraged to share about their experience as children, including mistakes they had made and what they learned from them.

My friend said something hurtful to me.
  1. How do you feel about it?

  2. What do you think about what they said?

  3. What would you like to tell your friend about the incident? (They can write it down if they’d like)

My best friend has a new friend who I don’t like.
  1. Tell me about the new friend.

  2. What don’t you like about them?

  3. Do you have anything in common?

I want to befriend a kid in my class, but they are not popular, and I am worried that other people will make fun of me.
  1. Tell me about the kid you want to befriend. What do you like about them?

  2. How would you like your friends to respond to you making a new friend?

  3. Are you comfortable sharing your views with your friends?

I am always alone during recess/mealtime. If this doesn’t apply to your child, ask them if they know anyone who is always alone.
  1. How do you feel when you are alone?

  2. Is there anything you can do to befriend a classmate?

  3. Is there an adult at school that you feel comfortable approaching for help?

My friend always refuses to share toys with me when we play together.
  1. How does it feel when they don’t share toys with you?

  2. Can you think of a way to solve this conflict?

  3. Do you have other friends who share toys that you could play with?

I like to have friends over, but I don’t like to share my toys with them.
  1. How do you think your friends feel when you don’t share toys with them? (if it’s too hard for them, ask – how would you feel if it was the other way around)

  2. Can you think of toys that would be more fun to play with someone than by yourself?

  3. What can you do with the special toys you don’t want to share?

My friends got together and didn’t invite me.
  1. Have you shared your feelings with your friends?

  2. Are there other friends you can hang out with?

  3. What would you do if they hang out again and don’t invite you?

My friend always decides what we play with. Sometimes I want to choose too.
  1. How do you feel when your friend chooses an activity don’t like to do?

  2. How can you make sure that both of you decide what to play with?

  3. What happens if you disagree on how you would like to spend your time together?

Things that I am looking for in a friend.

Make a list, decorate it, and hang it by your desk.
